The anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments (ACL and PCL) are the major stabilizing ligaments of the knee. The cruciate ligaments are located in the center of the knee joint and run from the femur (thigh bone) to the tibia (shin bone), through the center of the knee. In this position, they function to prevent a buckling type of instability of the knee.
